Where to Stay in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc has no single center, so the right base depends on what you plan to do each day. Here are the main areas compared, how far they are from the airport and the visa rules for the island.

Choosing an area on Phu Quoc

The island is large, and the main sights are spread out. Duong Dong and Long Beach lie on the west coast, the cable car and Sunset Town are in the south at An Thoi, and the Safari is in the northwest. Pick your base by the thing you will do most, whether that is sunsets, evening shows or a park day.

This page compares areas, not individual hotels. It lists no room rates, because prices and availability change daily. Check your dates with the property before you book.

The areas in more detail

What each area is good for, and what to check before you book.

Duong Dong and Long Beach

Duong Dong is the town reference point and, historically, the home of the night market. Long Beach runs along the west coast and is described as a sunset spot with cafes and bars. Their opening hours are the venues' own, not a fixed beach schedule. The night market has been in transition, so read our night market page before you plan evenings around it. We cannot promise that a given room is quiet or within walking distance.

Ong Lang

Ong Lang lies north of Duong Dong. It has several sandy bays with rocky sections in between, so it is not one continuous sand beach. Treat it as its own location, separate from Long Beach.

Khem and Sunset Town in the south

A JW Marriott resort sits directly on Khem Beach, which confirms the area as a resort location. That does not mean the whole beach is private or that you can cross the hotel grounds to reach it. Sunset Town, Kiss Bridge and the cable car station are in the An Thoi area, not the same place as Khem. See the Sunset Town page and the cable car page.

Bai Dai and Ganh Dau in the northwest

The Safari sits in the Bai Dai and Ganh Dau area. Ganh Dau is at the northern end of the west coast, with fishing boats and a view toward the Cambodian islands. If a park day is the point of your trip, this can work as a separate base. Do not assume daily hotel shuttles or fixed travel times to other parts of the island.

Getting in and around

Arrival pickups happen at marked areas in front of the arrivals terminal, so match the driver and the vehicle number before you get in. Hotel shuttles can be free or paid, so agree on that before you arrive. If a hotel offers a transfer, ask for the price and the time the driver will wait.

Evening plans in the south, such as the usual 21:00 show at Sunset Town, mean a late ride back. Ask your hotel how to get home after the show. Other guides on this site cover the beaches, the An Thoi boat trips and the parks, so you can match your base to your plans.

Visa rules for Phu Quoc

Status as of October 2026. Rules change, so check them with the foreign ministry or an embassy before you book.

RuleStayWhoNotes
Phu Quoc island exemptionUp to 30 daysForeigners entering Phu Quoc from abroadIsland only. Covers a stay in the transit area of another international border crossing before onward travel to the island.
National exemption for German citizensUp to 45 daysGerman citizensSince 15 March 2025. Passport valid at least 6 months on entry. Listed until 14 March 2028.
E-visaUp to 90 daysTravelers who need a visaAn instruction page lists USD 25 for single entry and USD 50 for multiple entry. Use the portal evisa.gov.vn.

The island exemption comes from the foreign ministry's list, in the version dated 14 March 2025 and published on 30 June 2025. It applies to foreigners who travel to Phu Quoc from abroad. A flight straight to the island is the simplest case, and the transit-area stay is the one exception named. It does not cover a free-roaming holiday on the mainland in between.

For German citizens, Vietnam's consulate general in Frankfurt describes the 45-day exemption as nationwide. The day of entry and the day of exit both count. The exemption does not apply to every nationality. A traveler who can use a national exemption does not need an e-visa just because the trip includes the mainland. Which rule fits depends on your passport, your route and the length of your stay. Nobody can guarantee entry in advance.

Several details are not clearly set out in the published rules: separate tickets, a change of terminal, baggage collection and immigration during a transit, a return via the mainland, and an extension of the island exemption. Ask your airline, and confirm the rules with the embassy before you buy tickets. The old e-visa form is not the current application route, so use the portal named above.

If your trip continues to the Mekong side of the mainland, ferries run from Rach Gia and Ha Tien, and the guide to Can Tho and the Mekong Delta covers that region. For another beach base, compare where to stay in Nha Trang.

Where to stay in Phu Quoc: frequently asked questions

Which area is best for a first visit?

It depends on your plans. Duong Dong and Long Beach suit a town base with sunsets. The south suits the cable car, Kiss Bridge and the evening show. No single area is best for everyone.

How far is the airport from the main areas?

The airport estimates 20 to 25 minutes to Duong Dong and 25 to 30 minutes to An Thoi by ride-hailing in 2026. Fares are estimates of VND 150,000 to 220,000 and VND 200,000 to 250,000.

Do I need a visa for Phu Quoc?

Foreigners entering Phu Quoc from abroad can stay up to 30 days without a visa. German citizens can also use a 45-day national exemption. Others may need an e-visa for up to 90 days. Check the rules for your passport before you book.

Can I stay on the island longer than 30 days?

An automatic extension of the island exemption is not confirmed. Ask the embassy or the immigration authority about your case before you rely on one.

Does a hotel on Khem Beach mean a private beach?

No. A resort on the beach does not prove that the whole beach is private, and it does not guarantee public access through the hotel grounds. Ask the hotel how access works.

Are the airport shuttles free?

Hotel shuttles can be free or paid. Agree on the price and the pickup point with your hotel before you travel.
